Gym Essentials: What you need to up your game in the Gym

The gym can be a super intimidating place for newbies. Trust me I've been there. You walk in amongst tons of new machinery and gadgets and everyone else seems to know what they are doing. Maybe you just get on the cardio equipment and don't touch the weights out of fear of being looked at or judged. Maybe you go once, feel uncomfortable, and never return.  I felt this way when I first got started, and there's a few tips I picked up that have helped me hold my head high and focus on me. They also helped me get into the weight room and start squatting with the big boys. So here's a few essentials that can help you kill it in the gym.

1. Make an awesome playlist. In my opinion workout playlists are a piece of art. You need songs on there that you can turn to that will help you push yourself to the limit. For example if I'm having a hard time pushing through my workout I know Drake's 'Back to Back' will get me going. Also I'm pretty sure Beyonce's 'Crazy In Love' is what got me to run my fastest mile. I follow Spotify's playlist 'Fun Workout', 'HIIT-hop', and 'Workout Twerk-Out' to get new songs for my playlists.  Of course this means I pay the 10 dollars a month for Spotify Premium, but it is so worth it for me.

2. Write down your workout before you get to the gym. Or have it saved on your phone. This will help you focus on your work out and is also a handy tool to look back on your fitness journey and see how far you've come. If you don't have anything to write down try printing out my Booty Building Workout and bring that with you. 

3. Get awesome headphones. Again music is so important to zoning out and focusing on you. I highly recommend Bluetooth wireless headphones as these won't get tangled in your arms or catch on to other equipment. Also if you are doing fast movements like burpees or jumping jacks you don't have to worry about the headphone cords at all, it's amazing. I'm currently using a cheaper pair but my dream headphones are the wireless Beats by Dre (in all black, duh).

4. Bring a water bottle! Hydration is SO important for muscle recovery and overall health and wellness. So carry that water bottle around with you and treat it like a baby would it's milk bottle. I use a Swell water bottle which is AMAZING because it keeps my water super cold. I own the copper color but am obsessed with the wood color bottle below.


6. I personally don't use a gym towel because my gym has paper towel dispensers all over the place but if it didn't I would buy a gym towel because it's super important to wipe down your equipment after you use it. Also it would probably save you time from running around the gym looking for paper towel dispensers.

7. Wear an outfit that gives you confidence. This is something I try to do as often as possible and is one of my excuses for the amount of workout clothes that I own. Your outfit is especially important if there are mirrors all over gym and you are looking at yourself a ton. You want to see your reflection and think 'Damn I look good'. The confidence your outfit gives you will carry itself to your work out and will help you get more comfortable in the gym.

8. Use a workout program to give you confidence in your routine. There's nothing worse than going to the gym for three months and not seeing a change. Personal trainers can be expensive and group fitness classes don't always work with your schedule. I would recommend starting a program that is a PDF guide so you can use it whenever it's convenient for you.

I started my fitness journey using Kayla Itsine's Bikini Body Guide, I HIGHLY recommend this program. You can see my review of it here. Now I'm using Lauren Gleisberg's Total Body Transformation and will post a review when I'm done with that (currently very stoked on it).

9. Have a badass attitude. You made it to the gym and that alone is reason to feel amazing. You should embrace your inner bad ass and never apologize for your confidence. A book I recommend for further reading on this attitude change is 'You are a Badass' by Jen Sincero. I listened to the audio book and it seriously got me so pumped and helped me in so many facets of life. It has an underlying message of self-love, which is something I am all about.

And that's it! Of course you don't NEED all of these things to kill it in the gym. If you have the attitude that's all that really matters. But these are the things that were game changers for me. If you have a tip to add please comment!
